ROANOKE, Alabama — Family, friends and members of the Roanoke community are mourning the death of Synquavia Keyona Staples, affectionately known as “Keke,” who died at the age of 22 on September 27, 2026. Her death came alongside that of Jordan Darnell West, 21, in Huntsville, Alabama, leaving two families and a wider community grieving the loss of two young lives.

Remembering Synquavia Staples
Synquavia was a graduate of Handley High School, where she was active in school life and remembered for her involvement as a cheerleader. Local reporting states that she was selected as Handley’s 2022 homecoming queen and was also voted prom queen that year. She and Jordan West were both members of Handley’s Class of 2023.
After high school, Synquavia pursued her goal of becoming a nurse at Jacksonville State University. She had recently taken part in the university’s School of Nursing GOLD-AACN White Coat Ceremony, an important milestone in her nursing education.

Synquavia Staples Cause of Death
Huntsville police were called to an apartment on Johns Road at approximately 7 p.m. Sunday after receiving information that two people inside might be deceased. Officers found Staples and West inside the residence, and both were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators with the Huntsville Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit processed the location.
Police reported that investigators found no evidence that anyone outside the two individuals was involved. Huntsville police subsequently characterized the incident as a murder-suicide. Specific medical causes of death have not been publicly released.

The death of Synquavia has brought particular sadness because of the future she was building. Her nursing studies represented an important personal goal, while her years at Handley High School connected her with classmates, teachers and a broader Roanoke community.

According to Silmon-Seroyer Funeral Home, public visitation for Synquavia Staples will be held Friday, October 2, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. CST at the Silmon-Seroyer Funeral Home Chapel in LaFayette, Alabama.
Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 3 p.m. CST at First Baptist Church in Roanoke, Alabama, with Rev. Gilbert Staples officiating. Burial will follow at Skyview Memorial Gardens in Five Points, Alabama.
