SPRINGFIELD, Illinois — Gerard Broeker, 56, of Springfield, Illinois, formerly of Effingham, passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at his home in Springfield, leaving family, friends, former colleagues and members of the community mourning his loss. His death and arrangements have been confirmed by Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham.
Born July 27, 1970, in Effingham, Gerard was the son of Robert Broeker and Maureen Imming Broeker. He went on to build a career centered on communication, advocacy and service to others.
Gerard Broeker’s Education and Career
Gerard graduated from Quincy College in 1994 with a degree in Communications before earning his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Illinois in 1999.
Much of his professional life was devoted to helping people with disabilities and others who were underserved. He worked for the Statewide Independent Living Council of Illinois for many years and later worked with Human Services on disability claims.
His professional work reflected a strong commitment to helping people navigate difficult circumstances and access the support they needed.
Remembering Gerard Broeker
Gerard was known for his dedication to people who were underprivileged and underserved. His work gave him an opportunity to advocate for individuals whose needs were often overlooked.
Beyond his professional responsibilities, he was a longtime member of Little Flower Catholic Church in Springfield and remained connected to the University of Illinois as an alumnus.
Gerard was also an enthusiastic St. Louis Cardinals fan. One particularly memorable experience in his life was the opportunity to announce a Cardinals game alongside legendary broadcaster Jack Buck.
Family Remembers Gerard
Gerard is survived by his father, Robert Broeker, along with his siblings Roberta Meyer, Theresa Griffin, Jon Broeker, Monica Feldhake, Jeannine Lehman, Anne Miller, Kristen Rodgers, Greg Broeker, Ted Broeker and Madonna Broeker.
He also leaves behind 29 nieces and nephews, as well as numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Maureen Imming Broeker; his sister, Maggie Doedtman; and brother-in-law, Lee Griffin.
The family has expressed appreciation to Kenny Schwerman for his dedicated service to Gerard following his accident, as well as to the many caregivers who assisted him throughout the years.
Gerard Broeker Funeral Arrangements
A Celebration of Life for Gerard Broeker is scheduled for 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, October 5, 2026, at The Effingham Event Center Pavilion.
A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham, with burial at St. Anthony Cemetery.
